Removed alternator: housing and ventilation holes are filled with oil. · 18.09.2026
On the Mercedes CLA, the alternator is located in the lower front part of the engine, directly under the turbocharger and its oil lines. Over time, oil leaks from the turbocharger, flows down, and hits the alternator directly. As a result, the alternator fails not due to normal wear and tear, but because of oil and high heat exposure. That is why simply replacing the alternator in this situation is a waste of money.
ALTERNATOR GEORGIA in Tbilisi repairs alternators on every Mercedes CLA version — CLA 180, CLA 200, CLA 220 CDI/d, CLA 250 and CLA 45 AMG, both the saloon (C117) and the Shooting Brake (X117). Below: why the CLA alternator fails from oil and how we rebuild it.
It comes down to layout design. The turbocharger, its oil feed and return lines, and the oil filter housing are all located above the alternator. Due to gravity, any leaking drop travels downward — right onto the alternator. This is compounded by intense heat from the exhaust manifold and poor ventilation when idling in traffic.
An alternator is not a sealed unit — it has ventilation openings for cooling. Oil enters through these vents, triggering a chain reaction:

We do not start by removing the alternator right away. First, charging voltage is measured cold and warm, under electrical load (headlights, A/C, heater). Next, we inspect where the oil originates — turbo lines, filter housing, or higher up. Only then is the alternator removed and tested on a bench before and after teardown.
If the leak is not fixed, a new or remanufactured alternator will suffer the exact same fate within a few months. That is why we offer a warranty on the alternator repair only after the oil leak source has been resolved.
| Stage / component | Work performed |
|---|---|
| Teardown & cleaning | Complete removal of oil and carbon sludge, clearing ventilation paths. |
| Brushes + regulator | Replaced as a unit; the ID code is verified on a LIN tester for CLA models. |
| Slip rings | Machined on a lathe (if wear is within limits); replaced otherwise. |
| Bearings | Both replaced — original grease is washed out once exposed to oil. |
| Diode bridge | Tested; replaced if heat damage is present. |
| Pulley | Overrunning alternator pulley (OAP) tested separately — often the source of noise. |
| Bench testing | Tested under full electrical load prior to installation on the vehicle. |
| Turnaround time | 3–5 hours for the rebuild; oil leak repair billed separately. |
Sometimes — yes. If the oil contamination is recent and the slip rings are intact, a deep clean along with new brushes and regulator may suffice. However, if the car has been driven for months with an oil-soaked alternator, oil penetrates deep into the stator/rotor windings — requiring a full overhaul or replacement. Catching the issue early makes the repair significantly cheaper.
Not to remove the alternator — access is from below. Work on the turbo line depends on where the leak is and is quoted separately.
A used unit is often in the same state — oily, worn brushes — but with no warranty. A professionally rebuilt original is the safer choice.
Alternator restoration takes 3–5 hours. We constantly keep all required parts in stock, ensuring all work is completed promptly.
Yes, within Tbilisi — for diagnostics and removal. The rebuild happens in the workshop on the bench, then we refit it on site. More on our call-out service.
