Removed Mercedes GL Valeo alternator — evidence of prolonged engine oil contamination on the housing. · 02.10.2026
A charging system fault was identified on the Mercedes GL: the battery warning indicator was active on the instrument cluster, while the alternator output voltage was below the expected level.
During the diagnostic process, it was established that the original Valeo alternator installed on the vehicle had been exposed to engine oil for an extended period. The alternator housing was covered with oil deposits, and detailed inspection after removal and disassembly revealed significant wear on internal components associated with prolonged oil contamination.
The engine-side oil leak had gradually directed oil toward the alternator. Continuous oil contamination, combined with carbon dust, accelerated wear of the rotor slip rings and led to almost complete wear of the carbon brushes. As a result, electrical contact became unstable and the alternator could no longer provide the required charging performance.
In this case, the issue was not limited to normal alternator wear. A reliable repair required both restoration of the alternator itself and identification of the source of the engine oil leak.
Below, we describe the cause of the Mercedes GL alternator failure, the diagnostic process, the defects identified during inspection and the restoration work performed.
ALTERNATOR GEORGIA specializes in automotive alternator diagnostics and repair. We service Valeo and Bosch alternators installed on different Mercedes GL versions, including GL 320 CDI, GL 350 CDI / BlueTEC, GL 420 CDI, GL 450, GL 500, GL 550 and GL 63 AMG. Our service covers X164 (2006–2012), X166 (from 2012) and GLS models.
On Mercedes GL models equipped with V6 and V8 engines, the alternator is positioned in the lower front section of the engine. Because of its location, any prolonged oil leak above the alternator can eventually result in oil reaching the unit directly.
With a long-term leak, oil accumulates on the alternator housing and can gradually enter through the ventilation openings. For this reason, even a relatively small leak can cause significant contamination and alternator wear over an extended period of operation.
Common sources of engine oil leakage on the Mercedes GL include:
The exact source of a leak cannot always be identified through a simple external visual inspection. When necessary, the upper and front sections of the engine, the direction of oil traces, the alternator housing and possible leak points are inspected in detail.
An alternator is not a completely sealed unit. Its design includes ventilation openings and cooling channels required to dissipate heat from internal components. During prolonged oil contamination, oil can gradually enter the alternator housing through these openings.
Oil contamination becomes particularly problematic when it mixes with carbon dust and other deposits. This creates a dense abrasive residue that can deteriorate electrical contact and accelerate wear of working surfaces.
During disassembly and technical inspection, particular attention is given to the following components:
Alternator faults do not always develop in the same way. In some cases, the problem is present continuously; in others, it appears only after the engine warms up or when electrical load increases. The main symptoms include:
General alternator failure symptoms and diagnostic recommendations are covered separately in 6 Main Symptoms of Alternator Failure.
Removing the alternator is not the first step of the diagnostic process. The charging system is initially evaluated to determine the likely source of the fault.
Alternator output voltage is measured with both a cold and a fully warmed-up engine. The charging system is then checked under electrical load, including headlights, climate control, heating and other consumers.
If oil traces are found on the alternator housing, the next step is to identify the source of the leak. Valve covers, the oil filter housing, oil cooler, front engine section, seals and other potential leak points are inspected.
The alternator is then removed for detailed technical inspection.
The condition of the unit is evaluated before disassembly and again after the restoration process is completed. Final testing is performed on a dedicated test bench, where the alternator can be evaluated under different operating conditions and electrical loads.
If the source of the engine oil leak is not repaired, the restored alternator will once again be exposed to oil. This creates a risk of repeated contamination and damage.
Therefore, reliable and long-term alternator operation requires not only replacement of damaged components but also elimination of the original source of the oil leak.
| Stage / Component | Work performed |
|---|---|
| Disassembly and cleaning | The alternator was completely disassembled. Oil and carbon deposits were removed from the housing, windings and ventilation channels. |
| Rotor | The electrical condition of the winding was checked for open circuits and short circuits. Worn slip rings were replaced. If the winding itself is damaged, the complete rotor is replaced. |
| Carbon brushes + regulator | The brush and regulator assembly was replaced. The regulator ID code was checked using a digital LIN tester. |
| Bearings | Both bearings were replaced because, after oil contamination, the condition of the lubricant and the expected long-term reliability were no longer satisfactory. |
| Diode bridge | Electrical and visual inspection was performed. If signs of overheating or electrical damage are identified, the diode bridge is replaced. |
| Pulley | The overrunning pulley was inspected separately. Pulley wear is a common source of noise coming from the alternator. |
| Bench testing | The restored alternator was tested on a dedicated test bench before installation, under operating conditions and electrical load. |
| Work time | Alternator reconditioning normally takes 3–5 hours. Engine oil leak repair is calculated separately. |
The original Valeo alternator installed on the Mercedes GL is designed to handle a high electrical load. Depending on the specific version, its output can be approximately 180–220 A.
If the stator windings, housing and main electromagnetic components remain technically sound, retaining the factory components and replacing the worn parts can often be a more practical solution than purchasing a new original alternator.
During reconditioning, the factory housing and major components can be retained while the rotor slip rings, carbon brushes, voltage regulator, bearings, pulley and other damaged components are replaced as required.
However, the final decision is made only after the alternator has been diagnosed and disassembled.
If prolonged oil exposure has damaged the stator windings or other major components and restoration is no longer technically or economically reasonable, a ready-to-install alternator from available stock can be offered.
The most effective way to protect the alternator is to identify and eliminate engine oil leaks at an early stage. We recommend:
Ignoring even a relatively small oil leak over a long period can result not only in additional engine repair costs but also in the need to restore components installed on or near the engine.
Only far enough to reach a service facility, provided that the technical condition of the vehicle allows safe driving.
If the alternator is no longer providing sufficient charging, the vehicle will operate for a limited period using the battery alone. Considering the number of electrical systems in the Mercedes GL, the battery can discharge relatively quickly, potentially causing the engine to stop while driving.
The cost depends on the technical condition of the alternator and the number of damaged components.
Replacement may be required for the carbon brushes and regulator, rotor, bearings, diode bridge, pulley or windings. The exact price is determined after diagnostics and alternator disassembly, before the repair begins.
Alternator reconditioning normally takes 3–5 hours.
If the required parts are available and the alternator does not require additional work, the vehicle can usually be returned the same day.
Yes. Different Mercedes GL versions are equipped with both Valeo and Bosch alternators.
Both types are fully diagnosed, repaired or reconditioned as required, and finally tested on a dedicated test bench.
Yes, mobile service is available within Tbilisi.
Initial diagnostics are performed on site and, if required, the alternator can be removed. Complete reconditioning is carried out at our workshop on a dedicated test bench. Once the work is completed, the unit is installed back on the vehicle and the charging system is tested.
